Blended Learning: The online – onground exchange
Dr. Bobby Hobgood
The line between online learning and traditional classroom learning is dissolving as new learning frameworks emerge. How do both environments influence and enhance one another? Do students benefit from blended learning environments? How does today’s understanding of “blended learning” differ from historical notions of this approach to teaching and learning?
This webinar will explore the concept of blended learning as it applies to current teaching and learning paradigms. Special attention will be given to the symbiotic interplay between both online and face-to-face learning environments. The session will include a review of blended learning theory with examples of blended learning environments from K-12, community colleges, and higher education. Participants will leave with a framework for developing a blended learning solution for their classroom, no matter their location.

Keep Your Distance: Continuing Education During a Flu Pandemic
Dr. Maggie OHara, Ginny Sconiers, Ma Ed. And Matt Long, Ma Ed.
Although data is limited, school closures may be effective in decreasing the spread of influenza and reducing the overall magnitude of disease in a community.
East Carolina University has developed an extensive Pandemic Influenza Response Plan as a social distancing plan. According to the plan:
Social distancing is a public health action that limits exposure to highly communicable diseases by restricting person-to-person contact. A social distancing policy suspends classes and other public gatherings and places limits on campus business to help prevent the person-to-person spread of influenza and other disease impacting public health.
This webinar will highlight the specific aspects of the social distancing plan and specifically addresses how distance education can accomplish its goals.

Best Practices in Formative Assessment
Dr. Bobby Hobgood
While attending to the pressures of covering the curriculum, we sometimes neglect to purposefully integrate formative assessment strategies into our online courses. The solution to overcoming those external pressures lies in our ability to contextualize assessment as feedback that informs both student and instructor. Whether online or on-ground, its just good teaching and instructional design.
This session explores formative assessment techniques that can be easily integrated into any online course. These strategies can be used to enhance and extend the student’s role as primary stakeholder in their own learning. Participants will be invited to share techniques they have used with success. Everyone will leave with ideas for creating an environment where students see ongoing, formative assessment as opportunities for learning rather than evaluative activities where they are penalized for wrong answers.
March 25, 2010 - NOTE: This session has been moved to the NCDLA Virtual Conference component of the Blended Conference and will be offered at 4:45-5:45. The day is yet to be determined.
Statewide Proctoring System: The Academic Services Portal
Dr. Maggie OHara, Marshall Clark, Greg Miler, & Steven Hopper
The 2008 Higher Education Act includes language requiring institutions offering online / distance education to employ a mechanism to ensure that work being completed for a class is actually the work of the registered student. The most effective manner in which to accomplish this is with a proctored exam, but the costs of setting up a proctoring network are significant.
This webinar will present the application being developed by the UNC system that will facilitate the proctoring process for faculty, students, and proctoring centers
Don't delay! Become an NCDLA Member by January 10, 2010 to receive free registration for these webinars AND the eight NCDLA Virtual Pre-conference sessions on March 31 and April 1, 2010.
